Football News Update: Caleb Watts Poised to Shine for Exeter City in Upcoming Season
Exeter City, [Publication Date] – Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell has expressed his confidence in midfielder Caleb Watts’ ability to break into the starting lineup this season. The 22-year-old former Australia Under-23 player, who featured at the last Olympic Games, has signed a new short-term contract with the club after an injury-plagued first season at St James Park.
Watts joined Exeter City as a free agent last summer after leaving Southampton. He made an impressive debut, scoring in the 1-0 win over Cheltenham Town in September, and went on to feature 11 times before a hamstring injury sidelined him for a significant period.
“Caleb has been brilliant since he came to the club, the trouble has been getting him on the pitch as much as we would like,” Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon. “He had a hamstring problem that kept him out for a while, he then got back in last season to train – because of the situation we were in, we couldn’t get him in the team as much as we would like.”
Caldwell believes that a full preseason and staying fit will be crucial for Watts to showcase his talent and cement a regular place in the Exeter City squad. “The big thing for him is a full pre-season, the big thing for him is to stay fit, and if he does then we believe we’ve got a really talented player who has a lot to offer,” the manager added.
Exeter City will be looking to build on their previous season’s performance in the EFL League One, with Watts potentially playing a crucial role in their push for promotion. Football fans will be keeping a close eye on the young midfielder’s progress as he aims to make his mark in the upcoming campaign.
