Ally McCoist Identifies Key Problem as Scotland Struggle Against Germany at Euro 2024
Speaking as a co-commentator on ITV’s coverage of the opening game of Euro 2024, Scottish football legend Ally McCoist pinpointed the crucial issue that Scotland were unable to resolve in their match against Germany at the Allianz Arena.
“There’s a problem in front of the five and behind the four,” McCoist stated, highlighting how German youngsters Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Ilkay Gundogan were able to find dangerous positions in the space between Scotland’s defense and midfield.
McCoist suggested that none of Scotland’s nine outfield players seemed confident about whose responsibility it was to pick up the threatening trio, a problem that came to a head as Musiala put Germany 2-0 ahead. “There’s nobody that picks Wirtz up, that’s the problem,” McCoist said. “It’s a brilliant finish, he redirects it well. I was concerned with Scotland’s narrow four in the middle of the park and the wide defenders tucking in was exploited there.”
Scotland headed into the half-time break 3-0 down and a man short, with Ryan Porteous sent off for a dangerous, two-footed challenge on Gundogan towards the end of the first half. The VAR recommended the referee to review the incident, leading to the red card that compounded Scotland’s misery.
As the focus shifts to the remainder of Euro 2024, the Tartan Army will no doubt be eager to address the tactical issues that were exposed against the German juggernaut. With the Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and Women’s World Cup also on the horizon, the world of football has plenty of captivating storylines to follow in the coming months.
