Fleetwood Secure Winning Start in League Two, Euro 2024 and Champions League Updates

In the opening game of the new League Two season, Fleetwood Town secured a 1-0 victory over Grimsby Town. Mark Helm’s first-half strike proved to be the decisive goal as the Cod Army began their campaign with a hard-fought win.

Grimsby started the brighter of the two sides, with Charles Vernam and Jason Dadi Svanthorsson both coming close in the early stages. However, Fleetwood gradually found their rhythm and went close through Ronan Coughlan, who was denied by Mariners keeper Jordan Wright.

The opening goal arrived in the 18th minute, as Mackenzie Hunt’s low ball across the area was neatly finished by debutant Helm, who steered the ball into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead.

The game was temporarily paused midway through the first half due to a medical emergency in the crowd, which disrupted the momentum for both teams. Coughlan did have the ball in the Grimsby net shortly before the break, but the offside flag had already been raised.

In the second half, Danny Mayor and Hunt both had opportunities to extend Fleetwood’s advantage, but their efforts were denied by Wright and a deflection, respectively. Despite Grimsby’s attempts to equalize, the Fleetwood defense held firm, and Helm’s first-half strike proved to be enough to secure the three points for the Cod Army.
