Football News Update: Szoboszlai Sidelined for EFL Cup Final

In a significant development for football enthusiasts, Liverpool’s midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is set to miss the upcoming EFL Cup final due to a recurrence of a hamstring injury. The £60m summer signing from RB Leipzig has been a regular fixture in Jurgen Klopp’s squad this season, but his 2024 campaign has been disrupted by fitness concerns.

An injury sustained shortly after Liverpool’s win over Newcastle United on New Year’s Day kept the Hungary captain out for the majority of January. However, he made a return in the FA Cup, coming off the bench with an assist against Norwich City.

Szoboszlai then started in the impressive 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea in the Premier League, even scoring Liverpool’s third goal of the evening. Nonetheless, the 23-year-old missed the crunch encounter against Arsenal on Sunday after experiencing pain in his thigh.

According to Hungarian outlet Index, Szoboszlai will be sidelined for approximately four weeks, effectively ruling him out of the EFL Cup final scheduled for February 25th. Klopp confirmed the news, stating, “Doma felt pain in the same, or at least very close, part of his thigh as where his injury was before.”

While Szoboszlai’s absence during January was mitigated by the winter break and Liverpool’s seamless progression in the FA Cup, the coming weeks are set to be much busier for the Reds. With five matches in the final three weeks of this month and a return to Europa League action in early March, Klopp will hope to have his midfield maestro back in time for the crucial clash with title rivals Manchester City on March 10th.

Liverpool’s next fixture will see them host relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.
