Football News Update: Manchester United’s Squad Concerns Ahead of Premier League Season
Manchester, England – As the new Premier League season approaches, Manchester United’s squad has become a “big concern,” according to talkSPORT’s Manchester football correspondent, Michael Gray.
Gray pointed out the amount of “dead weight” still at Old Trafford, despite the club’s efforts to bolster their squad. While United have made signings, such as Leny Yoro from Lille for £52 million and Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for £36 million, Gray believes the Red Devils needed many more quality recruits to address their disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season.
“There’s two big signings have walked through the door, but the performances now… If you go back to my days, pre-season was about getting fit. But I think it’s a little bit more than that now,” Gray said on talkSPORT Breakfast.
The squad overhaul under Sir Jim Ratcliffe was expected to include the departure of players like Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Scott McTominay, but none have left the club so far.
Gray fears that if manager Erik ten Hag fails to get off to a winning start in the first two or three games, the pressure will mount on him. The Premier League season kicks off with a Community Shield clash against Manchester City, followed by matches against Fulham and Brighton.
“If [Ten Hag] doesn’t hit the ground running, then fingers are going to get pointed. We know he’s under pressure, we know what’s happening behind the scenes at Manchester United and it’s been a big turn around as well,” Gray added.
Despite winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in his two seasons at the helm, Ten Hag’s job security could be in jeopardy if Manchester United fail to get off to a strong start in the new campaign.
