Football News Update: Euro 2024, Champions League, and More

Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, flanked Jurgen Klopp’s assistant, Pepijn Lijnders, at the manager’s first media conference of the summer. So far, it has been a quiet recruitment period at Anfield, although the Reds were offered the chance to sign Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, who is currently representing England at the Euros, before the June 30th deadline for clubs to submit their Profit and Sustainability accounts.

With uncertainty surrounding the future of star forward Mohamed Salah, who is entering the final year of his contract, there are significant issues for the club to address. Lijnders, however, is comfortable working with Hughes and the returning Michael Edwards, the club’s chief executive of football, stating that it is unusual for clubs not to operate with the European model and that he cannot imagine the club conducting business without consulting him first.

“When there are major competitions โ€“ such as the Copa America, the Euros, and the Olympics โ€“ during the summer, the attention will be on them,” he explained. “After the flurry in June, my prediction is that it will calm down a bit in July, and then when August starts and coaches have had more time to work with players, and opinions will be more set, you may see a situation where there is a bit of a hurry to get things done and make sure everyone’s squad is in order.”

Regarding the economic situation, Hughes acknowledged the uncertainty, stating that “it is hard to say and that was probably the reason for what happened in June. But now I would say a quiet July and a crescendo in August awaits us all.”

As the football world shifts its focus to the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, the Champions League, the FIFA World Cup, and the Women’s World Cup, the transfer market is expected to remain relatively quiet in the coming weeks. However, as the new season approaches, clubs will undoubtedly be looking to strengthen their squads, with the Premier League, EFL Cup, EFL Championship, EFL One, EFL Two, and FA Cup all set to provide plenty of excitement for football fans.
