Football News Update: Newcastle Bolster Defense, Eye AC Milan’s Tomori

In a bid to bolster their defensive line, Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a second defensive signing of the summer, with the club said to have contacted the representatives of AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

The Magpies were hindered at the back last season, with key assets like Sven Botman and goalkeeper Nick Pope spending extended periods sidelined due to injuries. This saw them drop from a fourth-place finish the previous season to a seventh-place result.

This season, manager Eddie Howe will be keen to steer Newcastle back to the heights they reached previously, and ensuring he has adequate depth in crucial positions is expected to aid that pursuit.

Newcastle have already secured the signing of Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly to bolster their defense, and they are now reportedly targeting another star center-back in the form of Tomori.

According to Football Insider, the Magpies have been in touch with the player’s representatives as part of their plan to secure his services. Their discussions aim to gauge Tomori’s interest in a potential return to the Premier League, having played 27 senior games for his former club Chelsea before making the move to AC Milan in search of more playing time.

The English defender has since gone on to feature 142 times for the Serie A giants over the past four seasons, and it remains uncertain whether he would be willing to leave the San Siro to take on another challenge in the English top flight.

If Tomori does make the switch to Newcastle, he would become the second player to join the Magpies from AC Milan in the past two seasons, following the £55 million arrival of midfielder Sandro Tonali, which stands as the club’s second-most expensive signing ever.

However, Tonali’s start at Newcastle was hindered by a ban for betting breaches, though he is set to return to action in August.

Newcastle will be hoping for a smooth transition should they succeed in bringing Tomori to St. James’ Park, as they continue their efforts to strengthen the squad and challenge for top-tier positions in the upcoming Premier League season.
