Football News: Newcastle Eye Euro 2022 Champion Nikita Parris to Boost WSL Promotion Bid
Newcastle United are interested in signing Nikita Parris, the England striker, from Women’s Super League (WSL) club Manchester United. The newly promoted Women’s Championship side are hoping to bolster their attack and increase their chances of earning a spot in the top-flight WSL.
Parris, a 71-cap Lioness, has been with Manchester United since 2022. The Liverpool-born forward, who has netted 17 goals for her country and represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics, has proven her pedigree, being named the Football Writers’ Association’s Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2019. She was also part of the England squad that triumphed at the Euro 2022 tournament.
“Newcastle, who are newcomers to the Championship, are ambitious in their pursuit of a third successive promotion, having won the fourth-tier and third-tier titles in the previous two seasons. They believe that signing a proven goalscorer like Parris could be crucial in helping them achieve their WSL aspirations.”
This summer, Newcastle have already secured several high-profile, experienced international players, including left-back Demi Stokes, who left Manchester City, and Northern Ireland midfielder Rachel Furness. The club’s business is not done yet, as they continue to strengthen their squad.
Last season, Parris was Manchester United’s top scorer in the WSL, netting eight league goals, and she added a further eight goals in cup competitions, ending the campaign with 16 goals in all competitions.
Other notable signings in the Championship this summer include London City Lionesses’ acquisition of the 35-year-old Sweden star Kosovare Asllani, as teams strive for the division’s single promotion spot.
