Football News: Manchester United Close to Signing Canada’s Simi Awujo
In a significant move for the Women’s Super League (WSL), Manchester United are in the advanced stages of securing the services of Canadian midfielder Simi Awujo on a three-year contract. According to The Guardian’s understanding, subject to the approval of a visa, the 20-year-old Awujo is poised to complete her transfer to the WSL club after productive negotiations.
Awujo has recently been plying her trade in the collegiate system in the United States, representing the University of Southern California’s USC Trojans team. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, the talented midfielder initially represented the United States at the youth level before switching her allegiance to Canada’s youth program in 2022. She made her senior debut for Canada that same year, at the age of 18, and has since earned 19 caps, including a spot in the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 Olympics in Paris.
“The acquisition of Awujo is expected to bolster Manchester United’s midfield, following the summer departures of Katie Zelem and Irene Guerrero.”
This would be Marc Skinner’s fifth summer transfer, after the arrivals of Netherlands defender Dominique Janssen, France forward Melvine Malard, Norway striker Elisabeth Terland, and Sweden full-back Anna Sandberg.
Additionally, it is believed that the FA Cup champions are also aiming to bring in a goalkeeper, in the wake of Mary Earps’ transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
The upcoming WSL season is set to kick off on the weekend of 21-22 September, with Manchester United hosting West Ham at Old Trafford. This is one of three matches the team will play at the iconic stadium this season, alongside the visit of Crystal Palace in February and the highly anticipated Manchester derby against City in May, on the penultimate weekend of the campaign.
