Football News: Danso Aims to Shine for Austria at Euro 2024 After Lens Resurgence

Kevin Danso will be hoping to continue his impressive career resurgence as Austria look to cause an upset at Euro 2024. Since enduring a difficult loan spell at Southampton in 2019, the defender has established himself as a key figure with Ligue 1 overachievers Lens, putting him on the radar of top clubs.

Danso starred as his team finished the 2022/23 French league season in second place, just a point behind giants Paris Saint-Germain, and qualified for the Champions League for only the second time in their history. The Austrian’s role in this was recognised as he was named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season that year, after forming part of a defence which conceded the fewest goals in the division.

He has continued to shine since then, featuring in 38 games across all competitions in 2023/24 as Les Sang et Or made their mark in Europe with a memorable win over Arsenal. Danso’s performances have been so impressive that Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has previously urged his former side to sign the centre-back to strengthen their defensive ranks.

“Kevin is now one of the best central defenders in Ligue 1, but also in Europe. He has developed into a complete defender who is not only strong in the air but also has good technique with few mistakes in his build-up play and very clean passing.”

Having made his name as a commanding central defender at Lens, the former MK Dons academy player will now be hoping to inspire Austria at Euro 2024. Unsere Burschen will battle rivals France, the Netherlands and Poland for a spot in the competition’s round of 16, in what promises to be a hugely competitive group.
