Football News Update: Xavi Simons Shines on Road to Euro 2024
Amsterdam-born midfielder Xavi Simons has taken the football world by storm, showcasing his immense talent and potential on the road to Euro 2024. The 21-year-old, who is contracted to Paris Saint-Germain but spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig, is one of the most sought-after players in Europe, with clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich expressing interest.
Simons, who is named after Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi, joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy at the age of seven and quickly became a star in the Catalan giants’ esteemed youth setup. By the time he was 14, Simons boasted over a million Instagram followers, a contract with Nike, and had starred in an advert alongside Neymar Jr and Ronaldinho.
“Xavi Simons is one of the greatest talents in the squad,” said Ronald Koeman, Netherlands boss.
Despite the early hype, Simons has taken a unique journey, moving to Paris Saint-Germain at the age of 16 and then spending a successful loan spell at RB Leipzig last season, where he scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions. This form has earned him a place in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024, where he is hoping to showcase his talents on the international stage.
Simons, who speaks six languages, has represented the Netherlands at youth level and made his senior debut at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. While he is yet to fully translate his club form into performances for the national team, Koeman sees him as “one of the greatest talents” in the squad.
As the Netherlands prepare to face France, a team that features several of Simons’ PSG teammates, both past and present, the young midfielder will be eager to seize the opportunity to showcase his skills on the big stage. With his versatility, technical ability, and immense potential, Xavi Simons is undoubtedly one of the most exciting prospects in European football.
