Football News: Bayern Munich Targets Liverpool Star for Major Summer Rebuild
According to reports, new Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany is ‘targeting’ a Liverpool star as he prepares to oversee a major summer ‘rebuild’ for the German giants.
After a disappointing season where they finished third in the Bundesliga and 18 points adrift of unbeaten champions Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich have decided to appoint Manchester City legend Kompany as their new manager. The shock decision comes after Kompany failed to keep Burnley in the Premier League.
Bayern Munich are expected to be busy during the upcoming summer transfer window as they aim to close the gap on Leverkusen. They are already battling Manchester United in the race to sign £60m-rated midfielder Joao Palhinha.
Now, the report suggests that Kompany has his sights set on raiding Liverpool for their England international defender Joe Gomez. The 27-year-old has been a vital player for the Reds during the 2023/24 campaign, making 51 appearances across all competitions due to his versatility in being able to play across the back four.
Gomez’s impressive form has earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, and Bayern Munich are said to be ‘targeting’ him as part of their defensive rebuild.
However, Liverpool are expected to issue a ‘firm hands off warning’ to Bayern, as they see Gomez as a hugely important player under new boss Arne Slot and have tied him down to a five-year contract until 2027.
Bayern Munich are also considering alternative options, with Chelsea’s England defender Levi Colwill and Bayer Leverkusen’s Germany international Jonathan Tah reportedly on their radar. But like Liverpool, Chelsea are in no mood to sell Colwill, who is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2029.
Overall, it promises to be a busy summer for Bayern Munich as they look to bounce back from a disappointing season and close the gap on Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
