Football News: Scotland Face Tough Test Against Switzerland in Euro 2024

Scotland will need an immediate response in their second Euro 2024 match against Switzerland, following a humiliating 5-1 defeat to hosts Germany in their opening game.

The Tartan Army suffered the loss after going down to 10 men due to Ryan Porteous’ red card. They will have their work cut out again against a strong Swiss side, who put in an impressive 3-1 victory over Hungary in their first match.

“We believe in ourselves. There is no danger of that not being the case. We know it was a bad night, but we have to try to put it right.”

  • Steve Clarke, Scotland boss

Defeat for Scotland would seriously dent their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time ever. Meanwhile, a win for the Swiss could effectively seal their place in the round of 16.

This crucial Group A encounter will take place on Wednesday, June 19, with kick-off at 8 pm UK time. talkSPORT will have full coverage of the match, presented by Hugh Woozencroft, with commentary from Joe Shennan and former Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo. The game will also be shown on free-to-air TV on BBC One.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has challenged his players to issue an immediate response following their opening game disappointment. The Scots will be forced into making at least one change, with Porteous handed a two-match ban for his red card. Grant Hanley is expected to take his place in the back line. Brighton’s Billy Gilmour could also be recalled to inject some composure in midfield.

Switzerland’s main selection headache comes in attack, as striker Breel Embolo marked his international comeback with a late goal off the bench to seal victory against Hungary. But with starting forward Kwadwo Duah also scoring, manager Murat Yakin may opt for an unchanged front line.

Match Odds:

  • Scotland – 16/5
  • Draw – 12/5
  • Switzerland – 5/6
