Slovenian Striker Benjamin Sesko Set to Shine at Euro 2024
Slovenia have long been known for producing top-class goalkeepers, with the likes of Samir Handanovic and Jan Oblak leading the way. However, the country may have found its next superstar in the form of 21-year-old striker Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko, who currently plays for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, has been attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs since he was a teenager. Matej Orazem, the sporting director at NK Domzale, the club that discovered Sesko, believes the young forward is “destined for greatness.”
“Goalkeepers can be stars, but it is a completely different thing to have a striker,” Orazem tells Sky Sports. “And that’s what Sesko is – a striker who is poised to lead the line for Slovenia at Euro 2024.”
Sesko’s physical attributes have been a key factor in his rapid rise. Standing at 6’5″ and boasting a top speed of 35.47 kilometers per hour, he is an imposing and athletic presence on the pitch. Orazem says the “physicality was the defining factor” in Sesko’s early development, as he was able to compete with older players from a young age.
After impressing at Domzale’s academy, Sesko made the move to Red Bull Salzburg, where he continued his development before joining RB Leipzig last summer. His 18-goal debut season in the Bundesliga saw him finish with one of the best strike rates in the league, behind only Harry Kane and Serhou Guirassy.
Sesko’s combination of physicality, pace, and technical ability make him a unique and formidable striker, and it’s no surprise he was linked with a move to the likes of Arsenal before extending his contract with Leipzig.
As Slovenia prepare for Euro 2024, Sesko will be crucial to their hopes of making a deep run in the tournament. Orazem, who plans to attend the games with his family, believes Sesko’s quality gives the country “a lot of hope” for the future, possibly even a World Cup appearance.
“He will be successful wherever he goes,” Orazem says. “If he stays healthy, he will do amazing things. This is not the last time we will be hearing about him, it is just one step along the way. There is a lot more to come. I think he will be a star that we have not seen in Slovenia before.”
With Sesko’s talent and potential, Slovenia could be set to make a major impact on the international football stage in the years to come.
