Football News Update: Sunderland in Talks with Lorient’s Regis Le Bris for Manager Role
Sunderland, the former Premier League regulars, are in negotiations with recently relegated Lorient head coach Regis Le Bris to take over the managerial duties at the club for the upcoming season, talkSPORT understands.
The Black Cats have been without a full-time head coach since February, when they parted ways with Michael Beale. Since then, Mike Dodds has been serving as the club’s caretaker manager, but Sunderland has been unable to secure a permanent replacement for over 120 days.
The 48-year-old Le Bris, who has been with Lorient for several years, took over the first team during the 2022/23 season. However, the following campaign saw Lorient relegated from Ligue 1, finishing 17th out of 18 teams under his stewardship.
“Despite the relegation, Le Bris made history in his debut season by becoming the first French coach in Ligue 1 history to record 25 points after ten games. Lorient also reached a club high of second in the table before eventually finishing tenth.”
Sunderland’s coaching search has largely focused on talent from France, with the club previously linked to Belgian-British coach Will Still, who has since decided to stay in Ligue 1 by taking over the reins at RC Lens next season.
On the pitch, Sunderland had a difficult campaign, finishing 16th in the Championship, a year after making the play-offs under Tony Mowbray and losing to eventual promoted side Luton Town in the semi-finals.
As Sunderland negotiates a compensation deal with Lorient, the club’s fans will be hoping that the appointment of Regis Le Bris can help the team bounce back and challenge for promotion to the Premier League in the upcoming season.
