Football News: Euro 2024, Champions League, and More

In a high-stakes Euro 2024 clash, England’s skipper Harry Kane provided the decisive goal to send the Three Lions into the quarter-finals, but the performance has drawn criticism from former Aston Villa and England striker Gabby Agbonlahor.

Despite Kane’s match-winning header in extra time against Slovakia, Agbonlahor believes the Bayern Munich star failed to make a significant impact in the game and should have been substituted earlier. Agbonlahor argued that players like Ollie Watkins or Ivan Toney could have found the net with the same “tap-in” opportunity.

“He’s not holding the ball up, not winning headers or stretching defenders โ€“ we need more from our striker,” Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT’s Sports Breakfast. “Yes, he scored the winner and yes, he scored the winner in extra time, but he’s not done enough to be staying on the pitch as long as he did.”

With the quarter-finals approaching, Agbonlahor suggested that Gareth Southgate should consider starting Toney or Watkins, and potentially bringing on Cole Palmer instead of the struggling Bukayo Saka.
