Football News: Euro 2024, Champions League, and More
In a closely contested match, England took an early lead against Serbia in their Euro 2024 qualifier in Gelsenkirchen. Jude Bellingham’s bullet header in the 12th minute gave the Three Lions the advantage, and they maintained control throughout the first half.
However, the second half saw a shift in momentum, as Serbia took charge of possession. Despite England’s early dominance, they managed only five shots in the match, with Serbia proving to be a formidable opponent.
England manager Gareth Southgate acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “We know we have good players, we know we can play better than the other day. But I thought the players, in an incredibly pressurised moment, started exceptionally well and defended brilliantly throughout the whole game. I think they’ll be better for having a game under their belt.“
Southgate also addressed the absence of defender Luke Shaw, who has not recovered from his hamstring injury in time for the Denmark match. “Luke won’t be involved tomorrow, he’s on track for what we thought originally,” Southgate said. “He needs a bit more work. There are days when he needs to do more than the rest and needs to recover. He’s still in and out with the others and operating on his own programme as well.“
As the focus shifts to the upcoming clash with Denmark, Southgate remains optimistic about his team’s ability to perform at the highest level. “Emotionally there’s so much tension, I don’t think people can really understand what it is like for young players. We are pleased to have got a result from that and we know we have to be good tomorrow.“
The Euro 2024 tournament continues to captivate football enthusiasts worldwide, with England’s performance against Serbia setting the stage for an intriguing encounter with Denmark. Fans eagerly await the next installment of this thrilling international competition.
