Football News: Kroos’ Comeback a Welcome Boost for Germany’s Euro 2024 Campaign
As the countdown to Euro 2024 intensifies, one of the most significant developments for the German national team has been the return of veteran midfielder Toni Kroos to the squad. The 34-year-old’s decision to come out of international retirement, at the behest of manager Julian Nagelsmann, is a move that has been widely celebrated by football enthusiasts across Europe.
Kroos, who had previously announced his retirement following Germany’s disappointing last-16 exit at Euro 2020, was persuaded to rejoin the Nationalmannschaft fold in February this year. The six-time Champions League winner wasted no time in making an impact, registering an assist within just seven seconds of his return in the 2-0 victory over France in March.
With 109 caps, Kroos is the third-most experienced player in the Germany squad, behind only Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller. His wealth of international experience will be crucial as Nagelsmann’s side look to bounce back from their group stage elimination at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
“Julian reached out to me and explained his vision for the national team,” Kroos told FourFourTwo, speaking as an ambassador for Rexona. “He saw me as part of that vision. He told me he believed it would be the right thing for the team and also for me, particularly for this tournament, on home soil.”
Kroos’ comeback has coincided with an upturn in Germany’s results, with victories over world champions France and neighbours the Netherlands in the lead-up to Euro 2024. Fans will be hoping the veteran midfielder can help guide the team to success on home soil, with the 2006 World Cup in Germany still remembered fondly as the “Sommermaerchen” (Summer Fairytale).
As he prepares for his final international tournament, Kroos is determined to leave a lasting legacy. “Of course, lifting the Euros this summer would be the perfect end to my career,” he says. “But I am realistic and I know it won’t be easy. I’m not going to judge my whole career on how this tournament goes – nor would I have done had Real Madrid lost the Champions League final.”
Kroos’ campaign with Rexona is about defying those who have ever doubted his career. He is strong, in form, and “Not Done Yet.” Rexona’s message of defying the doubters and breaking stereotypes aligns perfectly with Kroos’ desire to end his illustrious career on a high note at Euro 2024.
