Wigan Athletic’s Retained List Reveals Striker Exits, but Latics Look to Bolster Roster Ahead of 2024/25 Season

Wigan, England โ€“ Wigan Athletic’s retained list for the 2023/24 season has unveiled the departures of several senior strikers, including the club’s League One top goalscorer, Stephen Humphrys. Additionally, experienced forwards Charlie Wyke and Josh Magennis have also left the Greater Manchester side.

Despite these exits, Latics have already made some shrewd summer signings, bringing in winger Michael Olakigbe and full-back Calvin Ramsay on loan from Brentford and Liverpool, respectively. The club’s finest piece of business so far, however, has been securing a long-term contract for in-demand goalkeeper Sam Tickle.

Retaining the services of experienced central defender Jason Kerr is also seen as positive news for the Brick Community Stadium faithful.

However, with Wyke and Magennis’ departures, Wigan fans will be eager to see their club sign a new striker as a matter of priority.

Luckily, Latics may only need to acquire one new forward, thanks to the presence of youth academy products Chris Sze and Josh Stones. Moreover, Newport County’s Will Evans could be a perfect addition as Wigan look to build on a solid 2023/24 campaign and launch a 2024/25 play-off push in League One.

Evans, who joined the Exiles from the Welsh Premier League’s Bala Town last season, enjoyed a prolific 2023/24 season, netting 21 goals in 46 appearances for Newport. The 26-year-old’s impressive form included a goal against eventual FA Cup champions Manchester United in the fourth round.

With Wigan owner Mike Danson supporting manager Shaun Maloney’s transfer plans, the club should look to make more permanent signings this summer, as they are no longer under a transfer embargo. The acquisition of Evans could be a savvy move, as the striker’s playing style may be a better fit for Latics’ preferred style of play compared to the departing Wyke and Magennis.

As the new season approaches, Wigan fans will be eager to see how their club navigates the transfer market and shapes its squad for a potential push towards the League One play-offs in the 2024/25 campaign.
