Football News Update: Wrexham Face Sheffield United in Carabao Cup First Round
Wrexham’s supporters have an extra reason to look forward to the new campaign following their Carabao Cup first round draw. The Welsh side have been drawn against Sheffield United in the competition’s first round, starting on the week of August 12.
The clash, while not classed as a typical derby, will take on added significance following the fiery FA Cup fourth round encounter between the two teams just 18 months ago. After a thrilling 3-3 draw in Wales, Wrexham shared an image that mentioned Tottenham – the side who the winner was drawn to face in the fifth round – with a number of their players doing Heung-min Son’s famous camera celebration. This prompted a strong reaction from Sheffield United’s Billy Sharp, who expressed his displeasure with Wrexham’s actions.
“I think they’ve been disrespectful with a few things before the game, thinking they were already through,” Sharp told ITV. “I’m glad we’ve beat them. They’re doing well in their league, we’re doing well in ours, but I wasn’t happy with a few of their players.”
The incident was acknowledged in the “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary, with co-owner Ryan Reynolds stating that Wrexham successfully got under Sharp’s skin. Co-owner Rob McElhenney also commented, saying, “We were living rent free in that motherf*cker’s brain.”
This time, Wrexham appear to be more guarded in their social media activity, but that won’t stop the Hollywood duo from hoping to get one over on their new ‘rivals.’ Wrexham’s Carabao Cup first round clash will come days after they start their League One campaign, where Phil Parkinson’s side will face eight ex-Premier League sides throughout the season.
Football enthusiasts can look forward to the renewed rivalry between Wrexham and Sheffield United, as the two teams battle it out in the Carabao Cup. Stay tuned for updates on the match and the ongoing drama surrounding these two clubs.
