Football News Update: Cheltenham Triumph Over Newport in Thrilling EFL Encounter
In a captivating EFL fixture, Cheltenham Town secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newport County at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium. The game marked the debut of new Cheltenham manager Michael Flynn, who oversaw his team’s impressive performance.
Cheltenham got off to a flying start, taking a 2-0 lead within the first 27 minutes. On-loan Cardiff City midfielder Joel Colwill opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, following up a blocked effort from Ryan Bowman. Liam Dulson, making his EFL debut, doubled the Robins’ advantage five minutes later after a fine assist from former Newport loanee Lewis Payne.
“This thrilling EFL encounter showcases the excitement and unpredictability of the lower divisions, as Cheltenham secured a dramatic win in Michael Flynn’s first match in charge.”
However, the visitors, who were also under the guidance of a new manager in Nelson Jardim, fought back before the break. Payne’s foul on Bobby Kamwa in the box resulted in a penalty, which Courtney Baker-Richardson converted in the 31st minute. Ollie Greaves then found the equalizer just before halftime, tapping in after his initial shot was parried by goalkeeper Owen Evans.
The second half was a tight affair, with both teams battling for the winning goal. Cheltenham’s Ibrahim Bakare made a crucial header to deny Kamwa’s powerful drive in the 66th minute, while the same Newport player forced a reaction save from Evans three minutes later. Bowman went close for the visitors, but it was Colwill who clinched the victory for Cheltenham in the dying seconds, netting a clinical finish from Ethon Archer’s pass.
