Football News Update: Newport County Re-Sign Striker Courtney Baker-Richardson
In the latest Football News, Newport County have re-signed striker Courtney Baker-Richardson on a two-year deal. The 28-year-old returns to Rodney Parade after an impressive 2021-22 season, where he scored 8 goals in 31 Exiles appearances.
Baker-Richardson, a former Swansea City player, spent last season with Newport’s League Two rivals Crewe Alexandra, netting 10 goals in 44 appearances. Despite being offered a new deal at Crewe, the striker has opted to join managerless Newport, who have already made nine close-season signings.
“I’ve obviously been at Newport before so I’m well aware of what is expected down here,” Baker-Richardson told the club’s website. “I know the ambition of the club from when I was here. It’s a homely environment for me and I know what I must do to win the fans over.”
The striker’s decision to return to Newport comes amid the club’s ongoing search for a new manager, following Graham Coughlan’s departure on 20 June. The signing of Baker-Richardson is part of Newport’s efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers, Champions League, and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
With Baker-Richardson’s experience and goal-scoring abilities, Newport County will be hoping to improve their performance in the League Two standings and make a strong push for promotion, while also keeping an eye on the Africa Cup of Nations and the ongoing Premier League, EFL Cup, EFL Championship, EFL One, EFL Two, and FA Cup competitions.
