Football News Update: Former Swansea City Coach Joins Newport County’s Backroom Staff
In the world of Football, Newport County, the League Two side, has made a significant move by adding former Swansea City coach Nelson Jardim to their backroom staff. Jardim will be taking on the role of ‘lead coach’ in the new setup at the club.
The appointment comes as Newport County is still searching for a new head coach to succeed Graham Coughlan, who recently left the club by “mutual consent”, according to the club’s chairman, Huw Jenkins. Jenkins, who has a long-standing relationship with Jardim from their time together at Swansea, is confident that the new addition will bring valuable experience and expertise to the team.
Jardim, a 45-year-old Portugal-born coach, initially joined Swansea as a coach under manager Paulo Sousa before following him to Leicester City a year later. He later returned to Portugal to serve as an assistant manager at LigaPro side Nacional, before rejoining Swansea in 2017 as a lead academy coach. Jardim also had stints as a first-team coach under Francesco Guidolin, Paul Clement, and Carlos Carvahal at the Swans.

After leaving Swansea, Jardim was part of Aitor Karanka’s coaching setup at Birmingham City and then returned to Portugal to manage Maritimo B. Now, he’s excited to take on the challenge at Newport County, where he will work alongside current first-team coach Dafydd Williams, who also has experience from Swansea, and goalkeeper coach Jim Holman.
Jardim expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It’s the chance to build something new at the football club. It’s a fresh start for everyone.” With his extensive experience and knowledge of the club’s philosophy, Jardim is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Newport County.
As the new season approaches, football enthusiasts will be eager to see how Jardim’s arrival will impact the team’s performance in the upcoming EFL League Two campaign and potentially make a push for promotion.
