Swansea City vs. Gillingham – EFL Cup Preview
Swansea City will be looking to bounce back from their league opener defeat when they welcome Gillingham to the Liberty Stadium for Tuesday’s EFL Cup tie.
In contrast, Gillingham enter the first-round clash in high spirits after kicking off their League Two campaign with a dominant 4-1 win over Carlisle United.
Swansea City’s Opportunity for Redemption
Swansea City, who are currently in their seventh consecutive Championship season, suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in their league opener. They will now aim to offer a positive response in their first home outing of the season, and they may take confidence from the fact that they have won four of their last five home games in the EFL Cup.
However, Swansea did fall to a 3-2 defeat in their most recent home EFL Cup match, losing to Bournemouth in the second round of last season’s competition. The Swans last faced Gillingham in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January 2019, recording a commanding 4-1 victory.
Gillingham’s Ambition to Cause an Upset
Meanwhile, Gillingham boss Mark Bonner will be hoping his side can produce another strong performance in his first away game as the Gills’ manager. Gillingham have progressed from the first round in each of the last four seasons, and they will be aiming to beat Swansea for the first time since September 2006.
“We’re going to Swansea with a positive mindset and belief that we can get a result,” said Bonner. “It’s a great opportunity for our players to test themselves against Championship opposition.”
Predicted Outcome
While Swansea are expected to be without several key players, the home side are still tipped to showcase their Championship quality and secure a 3-1 victory over their League Two opponents.
