Football News: Preston North End vs. Sunderland – EFL Cup Preview

The EFL Cup first round sees two Championship sides go head-to-head as Preston North End host Sunderland at Deepdale on Tuesday.

Preston North End, who finished 10th in the Championship last season, will be looking to bounce back from their 2-0 opening-day defeat to Sheffield United. Manager Ryan Lowe will field a strong squad in search of the Lilywhites’ first win of the 2024-25 campaign.

Sunderland, on the other hand, are riding high after a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City in their first match under new boss Regis Le Bris. The Black Cats, who were defeated in the playoff semi-finals last term, will be aiming to continue their positive start and progress in the EFL Cup.

Preston have a fully fit squad to choose from, with the exception of injured defenders Daniel Ballard and Jenson Seelt. Summer signings Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Sam Greenwood and Stefan Teitur Thordarson could all feature from the start.

Sunderland are expected to field a strong lineup, with the likes of Jack Clarke, Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg set to lead their attack. Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson and the experienced duo of Luke O’Nien and Danny Batth will anchor the visitors’ defense.

“Despite the home advantage, we predict a narrow 2-1 victory for Sunderland in this EFL Cup clash. The Black Cats’ impressive start to the season and their recent success at Deepdale could give them the edge over the determined Preston side.”
