Cristian Romero Could Be ‘Close to Leaving’ Tottenham Hotspur for Real Madrid
In a surprising development, reports suggest that Tottenham Hotspur’s World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero could be ‘close to leaving’ the club this summer, with Spanish giants Real Madrid showing strong interest in acquiring the Argentine international.
Romero, 26, has emerged as one of the Premier League’s best defenders since joining Tottenham during the 2021/22 season. Last campaign, the center-back played a pivotal role in Spurs’ improved performance under new head coach Ange Postecoglou, scoring five goals in his 33 league appearances.
Romero’s impressive displays for both Tottenham and the Argentina national team, who won the 2022 World Cup, have caught the attention of Real Madrid. The Spanish champions were initially expected to sign Leny Yoro on a free transfer in 2025, but Manchester United beat them to the 18-year-old’s signature earlier this summer.
According to reports from Spain, Real Madrid is now considering a move for Romero, and Tottenham ‘would sell’ the defender to the La Liga giants, who are described as the ‘most determined’ club interested in the Argentine.
The report claims that Romero ‘could be close to leaving’ Tottenham, as Real Madrid have been ‘surprised’ by the £150 million (€175 million) exit price set by the North London club. This high release clause reflects Tottenham’s desire to retain the player unless an ‘extremely tempting offer’ arrives.
However, Argentinian journalist Gaston Edul has contradicted this, stating that Real Madrid had contacted Tottenham about Romero, but the Premier League club responded that they will not sell or negotiate the sale of the defender, who is under contract until 2026.
Regarding potential incomings at Tottenham, the club is being linked with a move for AFC Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke. However, talkSPORT reports that Spurs will need to first sell Brazilian forward Richarlison to Saudi Arabia for around £60 million before they can pursue the Bournemouth man or other striking options like Brentford’s Ivan Toney.
As the summer transfer window continues to unfold, Tottenham Hotspur fans will be closely monitoring the future of their star defender Cristian Romero and any potential additions to bolster their squad ahead of the 2023/24 season.
