Football News Update: Euro 2024, Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and More
Ange Postecoglou, the former Celtic manager who recently guided the club to a domestic treble in June 2023, is working as an ITV pundit for the coverage of Euro 2024. Speaking in his role, the current Tottenham Hotspur boss has backed Scotland to make history by sealing a place in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Scotland’s Euro 2024 Hopes
The Tartan Army know that only a win against Hungary in their final group game will be enough to secure qualification to the next round of the competition, after claiming just one point from their opening two matches. A devastating 5-1 defeat against hosts Germany saw Steve Clarke’s side get off to the worst possible start on opening night, but a spirited 1-1 draw with Switzerland means it is all to play for heading into Sunday’s clash in Stuttgart.
“I have to declare I am on the Scotland bandwagon, I have followed them now since I was up at Celtic for a couple of years,” – Ange Postecoglou
Postecoglou expressed his support for the Scottish team, acknowledging the challenges they faced against the hosts in the first game but praising their energy and ability to “run, harass with real energy” in the second match, stating that they have a good chance of causing problems for their opponents.
Player Perspective
Midfield maestro John McGinn has also spoken about Scotland’s chances, admitting that making it out of the group stage would mean even more to him than reaching the Champions League with Aston Villa.
“If we make it here, it would mean even more than it did reaching the Champions League with Villa,” he said. “They’ve been at that level in Europe before, but this is something we’ve not seen โ so, yes, it would mean a lot more to me.”
Football’s Global Landscape
Alongside the Euro 2024 coverage, the football world has also been abuzz with news from other major competitions. The Champions League continues to captivate fans, while preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup and Women’s World Cup are well underway. The Africa Cup of Nations Standings are closely monitored, and the domestic leagues, including the Premier League, EFL Cup, EFL Championship, EFL One, EFL Two, and FA Cup, continue to provide exciting action for football enthusiasts.
As the summer of football unfolds, fans can look forward to more thrilling matches, historic moments, and intense rivalries that will keep the sport at the forefront of global attention.
