Football News: Newport County Sign Former Sheffield United U21 Striker Oliver Greaves

In a significant move for the upcoming football season, Newport County have announced the signing of former Sheffield United U21 striker Oliver Greaves on a two-year contract. The deal is subject to approval from the Football League and international clearance.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder left Sheffield United at the age of 20 due to injury. After a period away from professional football, including a loan spell at Barrow, Greaves restarted his career with stints at Dover Athletic, Buxton in the National League, and Spanish club CD Almunecar City.

Last season, Greaves showcased his impressive goal-scoring abilities, netting 24 goals in 48 appearances for Mickleover in the Southern League Northern Premier Division.

Speaking about the move, Greaves expressed his enthusiasm, stating:

“There was quite a bit of interest from a number of professional clubs last season, but as soon as I heard about the Newport interest, I could not wait to get it over the line. I am buzzing. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the fans and the club, and I just can’t wait to play in front of them.”

This signing marks the Exiles’ fifth addition to the squad as chairman Huw Jenkins continues his search for a new head coach, following the recent departure of manager Graham Coughlan.

Earlier this week, Newport County also secured the signings of defenders Ciaran Brennan, Anthony Glennon, and Joe Thomas, along with midfielder Kai Whitmore, all on two-year contracts.

The upcoming Euro 2024 and FIFA World Cup tournaments, as well as the ongoing Champions League, Women’s World Cup, and Africa Cup of Nations, are sure to provide an exciting backdrop to the domestic football season, which will include the Premier League, EFL Cup, EFL Championship, EFL One, EFL Two, and FA Cup.
