Football News Update: Rotherham United Leading Marko Marosi Race for League One Return
Rotherham United are reportedly leading the race to sign goalkeeper Marko Marosi this summer as they prepare for their return to League One.
According to a report from The Shropshire Star, the 30-year-old Marosi, who is out of contract at Shrewsbury Town, is attracting interest from a number of clubs set to feature in the third tier of English football next season, including Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, and Wrexham.
“However, it is the Millers who are currently positioned as the frontrunners to secure Marosi’s services as they look to bolster their squad under the returning manager Steve Evans.”
Marosi would become Rotherham’s eighth signing of the summer, joining the likes of Jonson Clarke-Harris, Reece James, Liam Kelly, and Sean Raggett.
The 2023/24 campaign was a difficult one for Rotherham, who were relegated from the Championship after two seasons in the second tier. But the club has already been active in the transfer market as they aim to bounce back at the first time of asking.
Marosi’s Impressive Record at Shrewsbury
Marosi has been a consistent performer for Shrewsbury since joining the club in 2021, making 147 appearances across all competitions and keeping 35 clean sheets. His experience and solid form could make him a valuable addition to Rotherham’s squad as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming League One season.
Potential Impact on Rivals
The signing of Marosi would also potentially deny some of Rotherham’s rivals a boost in the transfer market, with Birmingham City and Wrexham among the other clubs said to be interested in the goalkeeper.
Filling the Void Left by Johansson’s Departure
With Rotherham’s previous first-choice goalkeeper, Viktor Johansson, having moved to Stoke City, the capture of Marosi on a free transfer could prove to be a shrewd piece of business for the Millers as they look to mount a promotion challenge in the 2023/24 EFL League One season.
