Salford City’s Rollercoaster Ride Under the ‘Class of 92’
Ten years ago, when Manchester United’s legendary ‘Class of 92’ โ including Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Nicky Butt โ agreed to take over the then non-league Salford City, Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim became a key player, taking a 50% stake in the club.
Lim oversaw Salford City’s rapid ascent as they climbed from the Northern Premier League Division One North to a place in the English Football League. The former United players celebrated with Lim on the pitch at Wembley when Salford City beat AFC Fylde in the National League play-off final in 2019, securing their place in the EFL.
Challenges in Recent Years
However, the past five years have proven much more challenging for the club. Salford City have changed their manager five times, made the play-offs only once, and finished a disappointing 20th in the EFL League Two last season.
“With small crowds at their home games, the club has been seeking outside investment for a while, but no one has come forward.”
Now, it seems that Gary Neville, the driving force behind the ‘Class of 92’ takeover, is taking on the responsibility of keeping Salford City in the Football League.
Upcoming Competitions
As the new Euro 2024 qualifying campaign gets underway and the race for the Champions League and Europa League spots heats up in the Premier League, all eyes will be on whether Neville and his former United teammates can steer Salford City back to success in the EFL. The upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and the highly anticipated 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will also be closely followed by football fans around the world.
