Stockport’s Winning Return to League One
Stockport County marked their triumphant return to League One with a 2-0 victory over Cambridge United at Edgeley Park. In the opening fixture of the new season, on-loan Aston Villa forward Louie Barrie put the Hatters ahead just five minutes into the match, capitalizing on a long ball from goalkeeper Corey Addai to lob the opposing goalkeeper Vicente Reyes.
The home side continued to threaten, with Jack Diamond and Kyle Wootton both coming close in the first half. While Will Collar thought he had equalized for Cambridge, the linesman’s flag ruled out the effort for offside. Shayne Lavery went closest for the visitors, but the Hatters cleared his shots off the line.
The second half saw a more subdued affair, with Addai making a smart save to deny Collar. However, Stockport sealed the victory in the 76th minute when substitute Jayden Fevrier set up Wootton to head home from six yards out, doubling the Hatters’ advantage.
