Football News Update: Stockport County Bolsters Midfield with Manchester City Acquisition
(Stockport, UK – July 1, 2023) In a significant move, Stockport County have secured the signing of midfielder Lewis Fiorini from Premier League champions Manchester City. The Scotland Under-21 international has penned a three-year contract with the newly-promoted League One club, with an option for a further year.
Fiorini, 22, has been with Manchester City since the age of six but has not made a first-team appearance for the reigning English champions. However, he has gained valuable experience through loan spells at Dutch club NAC Breda, as well as in the EFL with Lincoln City, Blackpool, and Charlton Athletic, where he worked under the guidance of manager Michael Appleton on multiple occasions.
“Lewis is another player that we’ve had a long-standing interest in trying to bring in, so to finally have him is really pleasing. He had a frustrating season last year with some injuries, but he’s a player with a really high ceiling and huge potential, who has trained with and learned from the best over his time at Manchester City.”
Stockport County manager Dave Challinor highlighted Fiorini’s technical abilities, stating:
“Technically he is fantastic, and he will undoubtedly be a huge addition to our squad. For a young player to have the experience he has in the Championship, League One, international football and in another country is rare, and we feel he can have a real impact over the next few years.”
The addition of Fiorini to Stockport County’s midfield will be a valuable asset as the club looks to build on their recent promotion to League One and establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season.
