Football News Update: Sunderland Women’s Team to Host Matches at Stadium of Light

In a significant development for women’s football in the region, Sunderland’s women’s team will play a minimum of four matches at the iconic Stadium of Light during the upcoming 2024-25 season. This decision comes as the team continues to grow in stature and popularity.

The Black Cats, who finished third in the Women’s Championship last season, just five points behind champions Crystal Palace, will now have the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of larger crowds at the club’s main stadium. The team’s regular home, the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground, will still host the majority of their league fixtures.

“With the evolution of the women’s game and the current developments to the ground, we are delighted that we will be hosting games at the Stadium of Light. It provides exciting opportunities for our players and allows us to further connect with the city.” – Sunderland women’s general manager, Alex Clark

The team’s decision to continue their relationship with the Hetton Town Trust, as they prepare for the new campaign, also highlights their commitment to maintaining strong community ties.

Last season, Sunderland broke their attendance record when 1,477 fans attended their derby victory over Durham in March. The Black Cats will face local rivals Newcastle United next season, following the Magpies’ promotion, further adding to the excitement surrounding the women’s game in the region.

This move to the Stadium of Light is expected to provide a significant boost to the profile and support for Sunderland’s women’s team, as they aim to build on their impressive third-place finish in the 2023-24 Women’s Championship season.
