Football News Update: Swindon Town Owner Reveals Healthy Budget for League One Promotion Push

Swindon Town, a team competing in the English Football League’s League Two, have set their sights on a promotion push for the upcoming season, thanks to a substantial budget increase, according to the club’s owner, Clem Morfuni.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio Wiltshire, Morfuni stated that the club’s budget has been significantly increased, providing the necessary resources to strengthen the squad and achieve their goal of securing a spot in League One.

“The budget’s gone up. Our budget’s quite healthy this season and you’ll see that will be reflected in the players we’ll sign,” Morfuni said. “When I spoke to Mark Kennedy in regards to the size of the budget and what we need to get promoted, and we told him the budget, he was quite pleased and was like, ‘That’s achievable.'”

The Robins, who finished 19th in League Two last season, have appointed former Lincoln City and Macclesfield boss Mark Kennedy as their new head coach, and Morfuni expressed confidence in the team’s ability to turn things around under his leadership.

The Australian businessman, who took over Swindon in July 2021 after a lengthy legal battle, has faced some challenges in his relationship with the club’s supporters. In May, a fan group, Trust STFC, wrote an open letter calling for a change of ownership and expressing a lack of confidence in the club’s leadership.

Morfuni acknowledged the need to rebuild trust with the fans, stating that the only way to do so is through the team’s performance on the pitch.

“It’s about what we do on the pitch. I can say a lot of things but it comes down to action,” he said. “I think we’ve started to show that in regards to the manager and [signing] Ollie Clarke and getting more signings in. That’s going to prove what we’re doing.”

As the new season approaches, Swindon Town’s supporters will be eagerly anticipating the team’s progress and the impact of the increased budget on their pursuit of a promotion to League One.
