In his latest Sky Sports column, Paul Merson says he would be shocked if England failed to beat the Netherlands in Wednesday’s Euro 2024 semi-final. The “Magic Man” believes that Harry Kane must start up top for the Three Lions.
Merson strongly rejects the “nonsense” calls to drop the England captain, stating, “Absolutely no chance Kane doesn’t start. The man is world class.” The former England midfielder argues that Kane “hasn’t got going yet, just like Kylian Mbappe hasn’t. They turn up in big games.“
Regarding Gareth Southgate’s lineup, Merson suggests that Marc Guehi should return to the starting XI, replacing Ezri Konsa, and that Luke Shaw should be given a chance to provide “balance” to the team.
While acknowledging the criticism England have faced, Merson believes the team has “another gear” and is “two games away from doing something that I didn’t think would happen in my lifetime.” He expects England to defeat the Netherlands 2-0 and then face France in the Euro 2024 final, which he predicts the Three Lions will win 2-1.
