Football News Update: Tottenham Close In on Archie Gray Transfer, Joe Rodon Heads to Leeds
In a major transfer move, Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of securing the signing of Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray. The 18-year-old England U21 and Scotland-eligible player is expected to undergo a medical at Spurs’ training ground after agreeing to a long-term deal with the North London club.
The transfer fee for Gray is reported to be in the range of £30 million to £40 million, with Tottenham beating out London rivals Brentford, who had previously initiated a medical for the youngster. Leeds were forced to accept Spurs’ bid due to the financial impact of their defeat in the Championship play-off final against Southampton, which cost them promotion and necessitated the sale of players to comply with profit and sustainability rules.
“The acquisition of Archie Gray is a significant coup for Tottenham, who have managed to secure the services of one of the most promising young talents in English football.”
In a separate deal, Wales international defender Joe Rodon, 26, will join Leeds in a move worth approximately £10 million. Meanwhile, Leeds defender Charlie Cresswell is set to join Toulouse for £3.8 million, while Marc Roca has been sold to Real Betis for a reported £4 million.
The midfielder’s versatility, having played both in midfield and at right-back for Leeds last season, will be a valuable asset for Spurs as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming Euro 2024, Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and Women’s World Cup campaigns.
The transfer activities at Leeds United are a reflection of the club’s need to balance their finances following their narrow miss on promotion to the Premier League. The departures of Cresswell and Roca, along with the sale of Archie Gray, will provide the necessary funds for the club to comply with the profit and sustainability regulations and potentially invest in new players to bolster their squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and EFL Championship seasons.
