Football News Update: Arsenal Tipped to Challenge for Premier League Title with ‘Pretty Special’ Signing
In the race for the 2024/25 Premier League title, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has predicted that Arsenal are just “one attacking player short” of overtaking reigning champions Manchester City.
Last season, Arsenal finished as runners-up, just two points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side, who clinched their fourth consecutive league title. Mikel Arteta’s team will be looking to go one better in the upcoming campaign, and the Gunners have already made some notable moves in the transfer market.
The Premier League giants have invested heavily to sign goalkeeper David Raya and defender Riccardo Calafiori, while they are also considering a move for Spain international Mikel Merino. With the impending departure of Eddie Nketiah to Ligue Un outfit Marseille, Arsenal are tipped to be in the market for a new striker this summer.
Carragher has explained why he believes Arsenal are just “one attacking player short” of dethroning Manchester City. “I can only see Arsenal or City really,” the former Liverpool defender said. “I think Arsenal are one attacking player short. They’ve got Bukayo Saka but the other two in terms of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard, I think they need one more who’s pretty special to take over from Manchester City.”
At the end of the 2023/24 season, Carragher had claimed that Arsenal “need two players” to win the Premier League title in 2024/25. “They need a left-back and I think they need a great attacker,” he said. “If they got another top attacker, you look at those five or six names, it is pretty tasty.”
The former England international acknowledged that while Arsenal were the “best team” for large parts of last season, Manchester City’s individual quality, with players like Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Bernardo Silva, ultimately proved the difference.
With the transfer window now open, Arsenal will be looking to make the necessary additions to their squad as they aim to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season.
