Football News: Marseille’s Controversial Pursuit of Mason Greenwood
In a move that has sparked significant controversy, Marseille have reached an agreement with Manchester United for the transfer of forward Mason Greenwood. The deal, worth £26.7 million, also includes a 50% sell-on clause for the Red Devils on any future sale.
However, the proposed move has faced strong opposition from Marseille’s mayor, Benoit Payan, who has urged the club not to sign Greenwood due to his “unspeakable” behavior. The forward was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape, assault, and making threats to kill, but was later cleared of all charges in February 2023 due to “a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material.”
“I do not want my club to be covered in shame. It is not acceptable.”

Despite the legal resolution, United still conducted an internal investigation, leading to a mutual agreement that Greenwood should continue his career away from Old Trafford. Payan, speaking to French radio station RMC, condemned the potential move, stating, “I do not want my club to be covered in shame. It is not acceptable.”
Greenwood, who spent last season on loan with Spanish club Getafe, has scored 35 goals in 129 games for Manchester United, as well as 10 in 36 while at Getafe. The forward is now set to embark on a new chapter in his career, with Marseille appointing former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager in the summer.
The transfer saga surrounding Greenwood has once again highlighted the complex issues that can arise in the world of football, where on-field talent and off-field conduct often intersect. As the debate continues, all eyes will be on how the situation unfolds and the impact it may have on Greenwood’s future and Marseille’s season.
