Football News Update: Liverpool Set to Sign Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi
In a major move for the upcoming season, Liverpool have identified Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi as their first significant signing this summer. The Euro 2024 winner with Spain is seen as a viable option to strengthen the defensive midfield role, which has been in need of reinforcement since the departure of Fabinho 12 months ago.
The 25-year-old Zubimendi, who is reported to have a release clause of £51m, is viewed as a long-term solution to fill the gap left by Fabinho’s exit. The Japan international Wataru Endo was brought in from Stuttgart late in the last transfer window for £16m after Liverpool missed out on a couple of other targets, but the now 31-year-old was considered a short-term fix.
“For a large part of the previous season, Alexis Mac Allister was deployed as a holding midfielder, and last month, Liverpool rejected a £12m bid from Marseille for Endo.”
The move for Zubimendi will be the first significant business for the new sporting director, Richard Hughes, who stated last month that July would be relatively quiet due to ongoing international tournaments, but August would bring “a crescendo” of transfer activity.
This potential acquisition of Martín Zubimendi is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Liverpool’s midfield ahead of the upcoming season, which will feature challenges in the Premier League, EFL Cup, FA Cup, and potentially the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup.
