Football News Update: Manchester City Agree €95m Deal for Julián Álvarez
In a record-breaking move, Manchester City have reached an agreement with Atlético Madrid for the transfer of striker Julián Álvarez, worth up to €95m (£81.5m). The Premier League champions are set to receive an initial €75m, with the fee potentially rising further based on various performance-related clauses.
Álvarez, the 24-year-old World Cup winner, has been eager to secure a more prominent role, as he was often seen as a deputy to Erling Haaland despite making 54 appearances and scoring 19 goals for City last season.
“This sale marks City’s record for the highest fee received, surpassing the £55m earned from Ferran Torres’ departure to Barcelona.”
The deal could be part of a busy few days for Atlético Madrid, who have also agreed a £33m fee with Chelsea for the acquisition of midfielder Conor Gallagher. Álvarez would become the second striker to join Atlético this window, following the arrival of Alexander Sørloth from Villarreal. The Spanish club has also strengthened their defensive options by bringing in Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad.
Manchester City are poised to make a substantial profit on Álvarez, who initially joined the club in 2022 from River Plate for £14m. Since then, the Argentine has won numerous major trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, Copa América, and the World Cup.
Manager Pep Guardiola has indicated that the club will only seek new signings if players depart. With Álvarez’s significant minutes last season, it is likely that City will enter the market, with their only senior signing so far being forward Savinho from Troyes.
Álvarez is currently resting after a busy summer, during which he won the Copa América and reached the quarter-finals of the Olympics with Argentina, where they were eliminated by France.
Manchester City will face rivals Manchester United in the Community Shield on Saturday, before kicking off their Premier League campaign at Chelsea the following Sunday.
