Football News: Manchester United Submit First Offer for Barcelona’s Pedri
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the football world, Manchester United have reportedly submitted their ‘first offer’ to FC Barcelona for the services of Spanish international Pedri. The Red Devils are willing to let the talented midfielder leave the Catalan club.
Manchester United have been actively engaged in the summer transfer market, having already spent around £90 million to secure the signings of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee. The club’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and his recruitment team are now ‘expecting’ to add Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich to their squad, with a combined price tag of approximately £60 million.
Pedri, the 21-year-old sensation, joined Barcelona from Las Palmas in 2020 and has already amassed close to 150 appearances for the Spanish giants across all competitions. In 2021, he was awarded the prestigious Golden Boy award, recognizing him as the best player under the age of 21 in Europe. However, the young midfielder faced some injury setbacks last season, which limited his playing time.
Despite his injury issues, Pedri managed to contribute four goals and five assists in his 34 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions, though he only started 16 La Liga matches. The Spain international also made four appearances for his national team at Euro 2024, but missed the last two matches after sustaining an injury against Germany in the quarter-finals, which was later diagnosed as an inner ligament stretch of the knee.
Fortunately, Pedri’s injury was not as severe as initially feared, and he has since returned to training ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. However, his future at Barcelona appears to be in doubt, as the club is reportedly considering a ‘sacrifice’ to accommodate the ‘probable arrival’ of Dani Olmo from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.
According to a report in Spain, Manchester United have emerged as the frontrunners for Pedri’s signature, with their ‘first offer’ of 60 million euros (£51 million) already reaching the Catalan club. This comes as a significant development, as both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly ‘lost interest’ in the player, who has seen his valuation decrease over time.
