Football News Update: Charlton Athletic Sign Millwall Defender Alex Mitchell
In a significant transfer move, Charlton Athletic have secured the signing of Millwall defender Alex Mitchell for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old has agreed to a three-year deal with the club, making him the fourth new player to join Charlton this summer.
Mitchell, who spent the previous season on loan at Lincoln City, where he made 41 appearances across all competitions and scored one goal, has now officially joined the Addicks. Despite making just one first-team appearance for Millwall, the young defender has demonstrated his potential during his loan spells, which included stints at National League side Bromley, Scottish club St Johnstone, and Leyton Orient.
Charlton boss Nathan Jones expressed his delight in securing Mitchell’s services, stating, “Alex is someone I’ve known for a while so I’m really pleased to bring him to Charlton. He has gone out on loan and played games which is important for a young lad.” Jones further praised Mitchell’s defensive abilities, noting that he will make the team “stronger, more competitive and more aggressive.”
“He has so much scope to grow. He’s 22 and played a lot of games and is nowhere near his ceiling. He did fantastically well at Lincoln last season and was a big part of their strong push in the second half of the season. He’s a player I’m very excited to work with.”
This addition to the Charlton squad is a strategic move as the club aims to strengthen its defensive options and continue its push in the upcoming football season, with important competitions like the Euro 2024, Champions League, and FIFA World Cup on the horizon.
