In the opening match of the new season, Millwall lost 3-2 at home to Watford. The pre-match tributes to their goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, who tragically passed away at the age of 26 in June, put the defeat into perspective. Millwall manager Neil Harris described it as “an emotionally difficult day.”

In the EFL Championship, Tim Walter acknowledged that depleted Hull City need reinforcements after their 1-1 draw with Bristol City. Regis Le Bris got off to a winning start as Sunderland manager, with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff.
In the EFL Cup, Stoke City started their campaign with a 1-0 win against Coventry, while Oxford United celebrated their return to the second tier with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Norwich City.
